Record quarterly tax revenue for Honolulu rail

Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu's rail project will receive $63.8 million in general excise tax revenue for the latest quarter.

Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation officials say it's the largest amount of quarterly GET surcharge revenue for the project to date. The quarter ended Sept. 30.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Tuesday the record amount is in contrast to GET revenues earlier this year, when the project received tens of millions less than officials anticipated.

HART Executive Director Dan Grabauskas says strong GET revenue coupled with $1.55 billion in federal funding is keeping the project on budget.

The $5.26 billion project is the most expensive public works project in Hawaii's history. The controversial project recently resumed construction after HART complied with a court ruling to complete a full archaeological survey across the 20-mile route.
