Wailuku man dies in scooter crash

HONOLULU (AP) - A 47-year-old man driving a scooter on Maui died in a crash with a motorcycle.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (http://bit.ly/HnXIpu) reports Earle Maielua of Wailuku died Monday afternoon at the scene of the crash on Waiehu Beach Road.

Maui police say Maielua was driving west just before 4 p.m. when his mo-ped was struck from behind by the motorcycle, which continued west and struck a parked car.

The 25-year-old driver of the motorcycle was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Neither man wore a helmet.

Police say speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Police investigated and closed Waiehu Beach Road from Kahului Beach Road to Eha Street for more than four hours.
