HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Dozens of police officers, military personnel, and security guards were recognized at the 29th annual Law Enforcement and Security Appreciation Banquet Thursday at the Japanese Cultural Center in Moilili.

Some were honored for their career, others for single, heroic acts.

Detectives from the Honolulu Police Department's Financial Crimes Division were recognized for solving more than 13-hundred cases last year.  They investigate a variety of crimes including scams and identity theft.

Annette Higa, a security officer with First Hawaiian Bank was honored for helping an elderly woman who was scammed out of 600-thousand dollars.  Higa was able to help police catch the thief.  He was convicted and the victim got most of her money back.

All the people recognized were nominated by their supervisors.  A committee then has the difficult task of choosing the winners for each category.

"We all vote and the majority rules," says Randall Mack, who promises an even bigger celebration next year, the 30th anniversary of the event.
