Local organ transplant recipient meets donor's family

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

It's a story of giving, the giving of life.

In 2007 25-year-old Emilio Martinez, an Argentinian national, was killed in a construction accident on Maui.

At the same time on Oahu, local man Aresio Domingo was facing terminal liver cancer.

Fortunately for Domingo, Martinez was an organ donor and his liver was a match.

He received the organ without complications, and has been living a fruitful life ever since.

Thursday, he met Martinez's mother and sister for the first time.

Before their meeting, Domingo was a mix of emotions: nervous, anxious, and above all, joyous.

"I'm so lucky to get a second chance at life" he said.

"Right now I'm so happy to get to see them, and I'm gonna give them a big big hug" he continued.

Down the hall at the Legacy of Life Hawaii center, Elsa Martinez was feeling much the same.

"This is giving life. This is what's important. Not the tragedy of losing my son, but the gift that he gave, and the pride that I have that he gave" she said through an interpreter.

When the two finally came face to face, Aresio made good on his word. The two shared a long hug, and some tears.

They shared gifts, laughs and more hugs. All of those, momentary exchanges.

However, the bond they share is eternal.
