KNOXVILLE, TN (WVLT/CBS) - Senior citizens are still
somewhat behind the curve when adapting to the way communication has evolved,
but a program was created to give them access and keep them connected.
Norma Woy, 81, spends nearly two hours a day in front of
her computer screen, and in just the last few weeks she became one of a handful
of "Silver Surfers."
"She likes to be on the internet, but she has
caregivers help her, so I thought it would be a good time for her to learn to
do it on her own," said caretaker Savannah Burchfield.
For many, surfing the internet is a good way to waste
time, but it has more value for older people - especially those who live far
away from their families.
It can be a good remedy for loneliness and depression,
which affects 25 percent of all seniors.
"They're thrilled to get to see their great-grand
mommy," Woy said.
