KAHUKU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Twenty-eight people were displaced today by a fire in Kahuku that burned two homes.

No one was injured in the blaze but fire officials say the fire caused $490,000 in property and content damage to the first home on Leleuli Street and $20,000 in damages to the second home.

"The people were able to get out without injury. The structure will have to be rebuilt on one side and definitely repaired on the other," said Honolulu Fire Department Captain Terry Seelig.

The fire started shortly after 10 a.m. on the bottom floor of the first home and it quickly spread upstairs, according to one of the residents.

"I really smelled something and a little bit of noise and I looked outside all dark and smoke and then I run outside," said Afiafi Fuimaono.

The fire quickly spread to a second floor room next door.

"Damage to the neighboring home ... significant damage to exterior walls, the jalousies are broken. Heat did roll into that room. Some did spread to that first floor and into the second," said Seelig.

The cause is still under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting the residents of both homes.
