Surf hampers attempt to stop Sunset Beach erosion

HONOLULU (AP) - High surf and high tides are complicating efforts to protect homes threatened by erosion at Sunset Beach.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports waves from the northwest pushed new sand onto the Oahu beach Sunday and Monday but threatened homes remain perilously close to a 20-foot cliff recently created by erosion.

State Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands administrator Sam Lemmo says four property owners have asked to place sandbags on the beach in front of their homes.

Another received permission to move sand from Paumalu Stream but the surf and tide are making the attempt too difficult.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration coastal storms program coordinator Dolan Eversole says the situation is critical for many homes.

He says one swell could take out a foundation or two.
