TOMS RIVER, NJ (KYW/CBS) - Close to the one-year
anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, which devastated the upper East Coast,
volunteers are still working hard to rebuild affected areas.
Thousands of volunteers from several different groups are
expected to help with recovery throughout New Jersey on Oct. 26 and 29 - the
anniversary of the hurricane.
The event has been called Sandy Service Days, and it
includes everything from building and painting lifeguard stands to serving
meals at fire stations.
"There are still so many people and agencies that
need help - things like shovels, sheet rock, power drills, lots of water,"
said Sherry Lynn Fazio with the organization Jersey Cares.
People like Elizabeth Nesse, who is still recovering, appreciate
the service days.
She hasn't been able to move back into her home, which
sits between Barnaget Bay and Toms River, because sewage and water from the
ocean, river and creek flooded her house.
"I've heard a lot of stories about people that are
still struggling emotionally, and every once in a while I still feel it,"
