Student enrollment drops at UH Hilo

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Student enrollment at University of Hawaii at Hilo has dropped for the first time in at least a decade.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Sunday that the student population this fall fell by 3 percent, or 138 students, to 4,034.

Chancellor Donald Straney says institutions across the country are seeing a decline in student enrollment as more jobs are created, sending would-be students into the workforce.

Straney says the campus cut its budget to account for the drop in revenue from incoming tuition.

Enrollment figures show nearly 7 out of 10 students are residents of Hawaii, while the rest hail from other states.
