WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

City crews will be using heavy machinery atop one of Hawaii's most recognizable landmarks late Thursday night to replenish sand in an area of beach that has been plagued by erosion.

A City & County spokesperson says that the machines will be used between 10 p.m. and midnight tonight to move sand from the Waikiki Substation to the erosion hole on Kuhio Beach as a temporary fix.

The timing of the replenishment coincides with the low tide, officials say.

Kalakaua Avenue will be closed for a short duration between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Thursday to move the equipment in preparation for work later in the day.

The makai lane of Kalakaua will also be closed in the area between 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 3:30 a.m. Friday morning.
