Waterline work to close portion of Beretania Street Tuesday

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Board of Water Supply (BWS) contractor will be working on Beretania Street at the Ward Avenue intersection to connect a new waterline on Tuesday, October 15, from 7:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. This nighttime construction work will close two lanes on the mauka side of Beretania Street near the Honolulu Museum of Art. As a result of this work one mauka-bound and one makai-bound lane on Ward Avenue between Hotel Street and Kinau Street will also be closed. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes where possible. Drivers traveling through the construction area are asked to abide by the posted traffic signs and to allow for additional travel time.

In an effort to minimize the impact to the community, the required installation work is being scheduled during non-peak water use times. This construction activity is part of the ongoing Water System Improvement Project on Ward Avenue from Kinau Street to Kapiolani Boulevard. When completed, this project will enhance water service to area residents and businesses by improving fire protection and reducing the likelihood of water main breaks.

The BWS strives to balance the need to replace aging infrastructure with affordable rates to its customers. Revenue from water rates fund the maintenance and replacement of Oahu's aging water infrastructure to meet the BWS's operational requirements and to ensure that customers will have water whenever they turn on their taps. The funding will facilitate proactive pipeline replacement projects, such as this one, to minimize water main breaks and will also be used to renew the BWS's pumps, reservoirs, and treatment plants.
