Great Hawaii Shakeout encourages earthquake prep

Posted: Updated:

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Hawaii is joining an international effort to prepare people for what to do in the event of a large earthquake.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the Great Hawaii Shakeout is an informal opportunity for schools, businesses and individuals to get ready.

It will encourage participants to take a minute or more out of their day at 10:17 a.m. on Thursday to pretend that an earthquake is happening. People will practice getting into safe positions to ride out an earthquake, similar to a fire drill.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory education and outreach specialist Janet Babb says the entire state has been affected by large earthquakes in the past and large earthquakes will occur again in the future. She says everyone needs to know what to do during a large earthquake.
