WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Maui police confirmed that 52-year-old Hal Silva set his Wailuku house on fire Wednesday morning and then killed himself.
Police say officers responding to the fire found the rear of the home engulfed in flames and heard several gunshots from inside.
Gerry Smith who lives just above the house was filming the fire when two police officers came running through his yard with guns drawn. Click this link http://youtu.be/Wh12E-ZSkxw to watch on a mobile device.
Investigators say Silva doused the home with gasoline then shot his family's dogs. They found his remains within the home along with three dead canines. A fourth dog survived.
Silva's wife was home at the time, but was not hurt. Police say Silva was suffering from mental health issues, which he believed was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from his past employment with the State.
