The American Institute of Architects Presents The Canstruction Competition

Posted: Updated:

(Hawaii News Now) - Hawaii's architecture community believes we can build a world without hunger, one can at a time. 13 teams of local architects, builders and allied design and engineering professionals will "canstruct" giant structures made entirely of thousands of cans of food in Hawaii's Eighth Annual Canstruction competition at Pearlridge Center, Uptown Center Court.

This year's theme is "CANstruction Wonders of the World," inspired by the goal of helping to end global hunger, one can at a time.

Members of the public are encouraged to participate by visiting Canstruction at Pearlridge Center and bringing canned food donations to support Hawaii's hungry families. The Canstruction structure that receives the most votes from members of the public (one can of donated food equaling one vote – but only cans count!) during the two-week exhibition will be named People's Choice Award winner.

Kids Can Corner: On Canstruction day from 10 a.m. to noon, AIA Honolulu member architects will lead keiki ages 5 to 12 in building a special structure with thousands of cans of their own. Bring at least five (5) cans of food as a donation and join in the fun in the Kids Can Corner!

"Decanstruction" of the structures will take place on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 27, after which the canned food will be donated to the Hawaii Foodbank.

Canstruction is a national community service program created by the Society for Design Administration on behalf of the design and construction industry. AIA Honolulu presents the annual Canstruction competition in Hawaii at Pearlridge Center.

Teams will actively "canstruct" their sculptures on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. Completed structures will be on display for public voting up to and including Sunday, Oct. 27.
