Chaminade women's volleyball team wins on road

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Chaminade women's volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak Sunday with a four-set win at Holy Names, 17-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-20.

The Silverswords improved to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in Pacific West Conference play. The Hawks fell to 0-18 and 0-8.

Kim Spring logged a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 17 digs, while Reigna Johnson had a career-best 13 kills on the evening with a .407 attack percentage. Athena Maskarich had 28 digs, two shy from her career-high set in August 2012 against Montana State-Billings. Valentina Bevilacqua also tallied a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs. Melissa Munley led Holy Names with 12 kills.

After dropping the first set, the Swords grabbed a quick lead in the second at 8-7, but a 10-2 run expanded it to an 18-9 advantage as the Silverswords forced the Hawks into four hitting errors.

Set 3 saw CUH open an 11-5 lead. HNU would eventually draw to within four. However, a pair of Spring kills, one by Kapiolani Rapoza and a Hawks' hitting error expanded the advantage to eight as the Swords won the pivotal third set.

Holy Names led much of the opening stages of the third set, but after a 9-all deadlock, Chaminade got three Rapoza kills, two from Spring and one each from Johnson and Crystal Powell to help put the match out of reach.

Despite being out-blocked, 7-5, the Swords out-dug the Hawks with a season-high 96 digs to HNU's 88. CUH also hit for a .149 percentage, compared to the Hawks' .109.

The Swords conclude their road trip tomorrow at Dominican (Calif.).
