The University of Hawaii women's soccer team dropped its second straight Big West road match with a 2-0 setback at UC Riverside Sunday afternoon. The Rainbow Wahine out-shot UC Riverside 8-3 in the first half, but the Highlanders came alive in the second half with two goals after the break.
UCR scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute, then got an insurance goal with a little more than 10 minutes left in regulation. The Highlanders, fresh off an upset over defending Big West Tournament champion Cal State Northridge, notched its second league win and improved to 5-7-1 overall. UH, meanwhile, dropped to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the Big West.
The Highlanders got the first break of the match when they gained the benefit of a UH hand ball in the box. Tyler Cunningham nailed the ensuing penalty shot to put UCR up 1-0 in the 54th minute.
UCR scored its second goal in the 79th minute when Kaitlin Anzalone fired a shot from 27 yards out after a UH clearance. It was Anzalone's first goal of the season and capped a productive second half for the Highlanders who out-shot UH 11-7 after the break.
The Rainbow Wahine now return home for a pair of Big West contests, beginning with a match versus UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Oct. 10.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
