FRESNO, CA (October 5, 2013) – The day started well for the Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (11-4, 5-2) as it won the first set against 21st ranked Fresno Pacific. However, the Sunbirds took the next three sets to earn the victory (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22).
The first set featured a huge Sea Warrior comeback. FPU led 15-12 before HPU ripped off a 5-1 run to take a 17-16 lead. However, the Sun Birds rallied and regained a 22-18 advantage. The Sea Warriors would then pour it on, taking seven of the next eight points. The run was fueled by aces from Kasey Thompson and Pomai Recca and kills from Samantha Rummans and Haley Doerfler.
The home team posted a wire-to-wire win in the second set. HPU was hardly blown out, but couldn't sustain success. The Sea Warriors trailed by two or three points for most of the set but did not break through.
HPU doubled up FPU early in the third set, taking an 6-3 lead. However, by midway through the set the Sun Birds recovered and tied the set at 13. From there, FPU went up 16-13 and did not look back.
The fourth set was similar to the second except that HPU jumped out to a 3-1 lead. After that, FPU again kept HPU at arm's length for the rest of the set to seal the match.
Recca led the offense with 18 kills and a .300 hitting percentage. She was also solid on defense with 18 digs.
Chelsey Buyuan led HPU in digs with 20 as Hannah Schuett did in assists with 33.
Rummans added 11 kills.
HPU will close the road trip tomorrow with a match against Notre Dame de Namur at 3:00 p.m. PST.
