The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team suffered a crushing 2-1 overtime loss to defending league champion Cal State Fullerton in the Big West opener for both squads Friday night at Titan Stadium. Summer Chavez scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute to lift the Titans (6-3-3, 1-0 BWC) to the win.
The Rainbow Wahine (5-5, 0-1 BWC) gave a fine effort for much of the match and staked a 1-0 lead in the second half. UH, strong on the road thus far this year, was poised to nab its first-ever Big West road win, after the team went 0-4-1 in its inaugural season last year. However, the Titans bounced back with two unanswered goals in the match's final 35 minutes to steal the match.
It marked the second straight year that UH suffered a bitter overtime loss to Fullerton. Last year the Titans downed UH with 79 seconds left in double-overtime, snapping the program's home undefeated streak at 12
Kama Pascua got UH on the board first in the 58th minute after taking a feed from Karli Look at the top of the box then firing a shot in the upper left corner. It was the freshman's third goal of the year.
Fullerton, however, answered less than three minutes later on an unassisted goal by Erica Mazeau. The rest of regulation went scoreless with UH holding a 17-10 advantage in shots after the end of 90 minutes, before Chavez ended the affair less than three minutes into the first overtime.
UH will next head east for a Big West match at UC Riverside on Sunday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. PT (10:00 a.m. HT).
