Internet expert warns against 'Health Connector' scams

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Hawaii Health Connector is still not offering health plans and rates on its website. Customers aren't the only ones waiting for that information to go online.

Scammers are waiting in the wings.

"You don't know who's really on the other side of the screen" warns internet security expert Chris Duque.

The Connector is well aware of the troubles that may be lurking. It's one of the reasons for the current delay.

"We are being very, very careful, and so we will not bring out anything that is not ready" said Hawaii Health Connector CMO Rick Budar.

Scams come in all forms. Some are embedded in emails, directing people to click on a link

"Please click on the link to subscribe, and you click on the link and it's exactly a mirror image of the bona fide website, but in actuality it's a bogus site which when you type your information you just give it to a bogus site" said Duque.

A user's age can make them more susceptible to these scams.

"Most of the subscribers that are gonna use the online service are going to be the kupunas, the seniors, and they may not be as experienced as the younger generation" noted Duque.

He added that due diligence is a safeguard against these criminals, and if that doesn't work, to ask for help from someone who is internet savvy.

"There's no shame to ask somebody younger to help you navigate. Then again too, I strongly advise my generation to help their parent, grandparents, their older relative to help them navigate the internet and make sure they go to the correct site".
