Electrical failure leads to sewage discharge

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A beach was closed on the Keaukaha shoreline in Puhi Bay after an accidental discharge at the Hilo Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports an electrical failure for 43 minutes Thursday night led to the discharge of 71,000 gallons of partially treated sewage into Puhi Bay.

The plant says in a statement that a redundant electrical system was used to restore power.

Warning signs were posted around the discharge site and the shoreline was closed to swimming, fishing and boating.
