Body discovered in remains of Big Island house fire

Big Island fire department officials recovered the body of an unidentified man while working to extinguish a house fire in Mountain View early Tuesday morning.

Officials say the fire, which was confined to the single-story home on Bamboo Lane, was under control within 20 minutes and fully extinguished by about 12:15 a.m.

Work on the fire was delayed when it was discovered that the nearest water source was four miles away and a water tank had to shuttle water to the scene of the fire.

Fire officials have turned the scene over to the Hawaii Police Department as they work to determine the cause of the fire.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday to determine the exact cause of death and to attempt to identify the deceased.
