Comic book used to tell WWII veteran stories

KAHULUI, Hawaii (AP) - Efforts to remember the sacrifices and heroism of 100th Infantry Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team soldiers who served during World War II are taking on a new twist: comic books.

Stacey Hayashi is putting their stories together in an illustrated manga, or Japanese-style comic.

Her book "Journey of Heroes" uses chibi characters - cute Japanese comic book characters with small bodies - to tell what veterans went through on Hawaii's plantations, after the Pearl Harbor attack, in internment camps and on Europe's battlefields.

The Maui News reported Hayashi told an annual memorial service at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center in Wailuku on Sunday that stories are the foundation of culture. She says stories are the way values are shared and passed to future generations.
