Kona coffee farm celebrates 100 years in business

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A coffee farm in south Kona is celebrating 100 years of operation.

The Kona Historical Society on Saturday will sponsor a centennial celebration for the D. Uchida Farm, which is now known as the Kona Coffee Living History Farm.

Daisaku Uchida started the farm. He left his home in southern Japan at age 19 to work on a Hawaii sugar plantation. In 1913 he leased land in Kona for the coffee farm.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports three generations of the Uchida family worked on the homestead.

The family left the farm in 1994. It opened as the Kona Coffee Living History Farm in 1999. The Kona Historical Society later bought the land.

Interpreters in costume explain how the seven-acre farm worked between 1920 and 1945.
