Man charged in fatal Big Island bike crash

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A 27-year-old Mountain View man has been charged with causing a crash that killed a Big Island bicyclist.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports 27-year-old Siaku L. Aholelei is charged with negligent homicide and manslaughter in the crash Friday in Puna.

Aholelei was jailed with bail set at $275,000.

Hawaii Island police say Aholelei just before noon Friday was speeding south on Highway 11 near the 8-mile marker in Keaau.

Police say he lost control of his pickup, crossed the grassy median and hit a bicycle heading north on the shoulder.

The crash killed 66-year-old Cenon Tranquilino A. Visaya of Keaau. Emergency responders say he died at the scene.
