Local fans cheer Te'o as he makes NFL regular season debut

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Manti Te'o made his long-awaited regular season NFL debut Sunday as he finally took the field for the San Diego Chargers against the Dallas Cowboys.

Te'o missed the first few weeks of the regular season after injuring his ankle in a pre-season exhibition game.

At the Side Street Inn on Kapahulu Avenue, several television screens showed different games, watched by fans in their favorite team's jerseys. Some San Diego fans were there to watch the Cowboys/Chargers matchup -- and Te'o.

"It's about time, he deserves it," said Te'o fan Channy Guzman, wearing a Chargers jersey. "He's gonna do good things."

Former San Diego resident Myrhaliza Aala was excited to see the game. "When he first got drafted to the team, my phone blew up and said, 'Manti's on the Chargers!' So I'm very excited to go back to San Diego to watch him play.

The Laie native was a standout for Norte Dame. His hometown turned out in force when he was up for the Heisman Trophy, and celebrated when he was drafted by San Diego.

But he also made headlines nationally when he was the victim of a hoax, in which his dead girlfriend turned out to be fake.

The chapter appeared to be history for his fans, including those in San Diego.

"We've had a lot of commercials about him, a lot of magazine covers about him," said Korinna Hernandez, a former San Diego resident and Chargers fan who still visits regularly. "He's just huge and everyone's excited about him being a part of the team now."

Te'o made some tackles against the Cowboys in his first appearance, and fans are looking forward to more.

"I'm excited that he's playing because I'm going to San Diego to watch them against the Colts with a tour group," said Aala. "I'm so excited that he's on the field and we'll get to see him when he's on Monday Night Football."

The Chargers defeated the Cowboys, 30-21. Both teams are now 2-2.
