H-1 Westbound zipper lane project now on hold

AIEA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

It was touted as the solution to the afternoon tie-ups along the H-1 westbound.  A zipper lane which is already used for the eastbound, morning commute.

"The AM lane works very well," says Panos Prevedouros, a University of Hawaii civil engineering professor.  "We did the initial assessment (of the project) to see if it would work."

Prevedouros says the payoff for the 82 million dollar project would have been substantial.

But it appears the price tag is going up and that's why the Department of Transportation is holding off.

According to the DOT's director Glenn Okimoto, it's a budget issue.

So the department is working on alternatives.

"They're adding lanes in the Pearl City, Waipahu area," says State Senator Will Espero.  "They want to see the flow and response for commuters and congestion in that area before making any decision."

Espero serves the West Oahu area and says his constituents would benefit greatly from the zipper lane.

He and Prevedouros hope the DOT will find a way to move forward.
