Man reportedly contracts flesh eating bacteria at popular Big Island park

PUNA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Officials on the Big Island have closed a popular swimming area after a man reported contracting a flesh eating bacteria from the water.

Ahalanui Park in lower Puna was closed Thursday, immediately after the Department of Parks and Recreation learned of the report. The man, who was hospitalized for his infection, swam in the park's hot pond three weeks ago with an open wound despite signs warning against it, officials say.

Health officials are now testing the water to see if they can confirm if it is where the flesh eating bacteria originated.

Ahalanui Park is a popular destination on the Big Island, visited by hundreds of people each day. It will remain closed until health officials determine it is safe for the public to return.
