Kaiser Hawaii partners with Assaggio to cook up diabetic-friendly menu items

Posted: Updated:

(HawaiiNewsNow) - In an effort to make dining out more enjoyable for Hawaii residents who live with diabetes, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has partnered with Assaggio Ristorante Italiano in Kahala to develop a menu of tasty and healthy items that meet the American Diabetes Association's dietary guidelines.

A recent survey commissioned by the Hawaii State Department of Health shows that approximately 85,000 Hawaii residents have diabetes. Kaiser Permanente physicians, diabetes educators, and dieticians partnered with Assaggio's owner and chef, Tomas Ky, to create a "Healthy Options" menu.

The "Healthy Options" menu includes nutritious selections such as Chicken Broccoli Sauté, Jumbo Shrimp Salad, Fresh Fish Mixed Green Salad, and Chicken Bell Pepper Linguini with seasonal vegetables. Each healthy and flavorful meal contains 400 to 570 calories per dish and 60 grams of carbohydrates or less.

The menu is currently offered exclusively at the Kahala Bistro location, but is slated to roll out in all six Assaggio locations on Oahu.

Dr. Jennifer Loh, Kaiser endocrinologist, and Anne Laporte, Kaiser diabetes educator, join us on "Sunrise" to show us some of those options.
