Kaiser High parents defend principal being investigated

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The award winning principal from Kaiser High School is under investigation and some parents are frustrated the Department of Education isn't giving more details as to why.

John Sosa was placed on paid leave while the Department of Education does an internal investigation.

The DOE hasn't confirmed what it's about however our sources say it involves some financial irregularities. When pressed today for more information the DOE's communications director said making any statement would jeopardize the investigation.

"I'm unable to confirm that at this time. What I can confirm is that John Sosa has been put on leave as the DOE investigates a case that continues to unfold. Making any statement beyond that would jeopardize the investigation and the DOE's efforts," said Donalyn Delacruz, Department of Education Director of Communications, in an emailed response.

Some PTSA members say the lack of details hurts the school.

"It is unfortunate that more information is not forthcoming, as it merely serves to perpetuate the adage, that in the absence of communication people tend to make up their own truth, which is often times more negative than the reality," said Debra Gagne, Friends of Kaiser High School - Parents, Teachers and Students Association (PTSA) President, in an emailed statement.

"Actually to be honest with you that's one of the things I'm upset about," said David Clyne, PTSA Past President. "No explanation, no indication at all about what caused this. No indication how long this will last. It's very very shocking."

The high school's PTSA members defended Sosa saying he is the reason for the school's success.

"John is an extremely honorable person. Whenever we were dealing with financial issues specific with PTSA or the school he went out of his way to make sure all bases were covered, things were being done properly, and things were being done legally. I cannot see at all how he would have been involved in anything that wasn't done correctly or properly," said Clyne.

Sosa recently won the Met Life principal of the year award.

Justin Mew, another respected principal from Niu Valley, has taken over for Sosa. The DOE says there hasn't been an interruption in student learning or activities.
