Hilo pot minister expects to be released soon

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - The defense attorney for a Hilo marijuana advocate says he expects his client to be released in about six months.

Hawaii Cannabis Ministry founder Roger Christie has been jailed for more than three years in a federal marijuana distribution case. He's expected to withdraw his not guilty plea Friday in a deal with prosecutors.

Defense attorney Thomas Otake declined to detail specifics of the deal.

Christie says in an email to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald he and his wife Share Christie aren't "frightened." His wife is also scheduled to change her plea.

A federal grand jury indicted the Christies and 12 others on marijuana trafficking counts. Most of the others have pleaded guilty to marijuana charges and await sentencing.

A judge denied Christie's motion to use religion as a defense.
