Grand jury indicts former Deaf & Blind school aide

HONOLULU (AP) - A former teacher's aide at the Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind has been indicted on counts of sexually assaulting a student.

The Oahu grand jury Wednesday indicted Alfie S. Lumabas.

Prosecutors say he assaulted a 14-year-old girl in 2005 when he was 29.

A federal judge in April approved a $5.75 million lawsuit settlement filed against the state and the Department of Education by students who said they were bullied or assaulted by other students at the school or on buses.

The state agreed to pay $5 million and a former counselor agreed to pay $750,000.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Lumabas is the first person to face criminal charges for sexual assaults at the school.
