A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
Police were at the scene of a deadly home explosion early Thursday morning to keep the site intact. Henry County Sheriff Michael Bodenbender says his part of the investigation at the scene is over, but the insurance company's investigation is still underway. The insurance company will be at the scene Thursday, and are expected to be there until Friday.
The explosion happened Wednesday around 8:00 a.m. at County Road S and 9. The homeowner, 72-year-old Steven Collins, was badly burned in the explosion. The body of 63-year-old Judy Garwood was found by EMS crews. Neighbors say Garwood was Collins' fiance who was living with him.
Sheriff Bodenbender says the homeowner told him that he and Garwood smelled gas inside the home just before the explosion. The cause of the explosion is still undetermined, but is believed to have been caused by a gas leak. The nearest natural gas line is located a mile away, but propane gas is used in the area.
