Hilo's 'Pot Preacher' will change plea

Roger Christie Roger Christie
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The man known as the 'Pot Preacher' will be changing his plea in court Friday.  63-year old Roger Christie and his wife, Sherryanne will reportedly plead 'guilty' to drug charges.

Sherryanne has been out on bond, but her husband has been in jail since July of 2010.

Roger Christie, an ordained minister, ran The Hawaii Cannabis Ministry, or THC Ministry in Hilo until the bust.

They used marijuana during services and handed it out to members, for a donation.

The Christies wanted to use the "Religious Freedom" defense but that strategy is not being allowed.

A family friend spoke to Hawaii News Now by phone.  Daniel Susott says he talked with Sherryanne recently and says she was emotional about the recent events.

"Partly that their defense strategy was banned, which is a shame, because they're very sincere about using cannabis as a sacrament," says Susott.

There were 12 other church members arrested during the bust.   Most have already pleaded guilty.
