Hawaii Paroling Authority hearing for ex-policeman

HONOLULU (AP) - The Hawaii Paroling Authority is holding a hearing to once again determine minimum prison terms for former Hawaii County police officer Kenneth Mathison.

Mathison was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 1996 for murdering his wife. Prosecutors say he beat her with a metal pipe and ran her over with a van to collect $670,000 in life insurance.

The paroling authority in 2009 determined Mathison must serve at least 90 years for murder and 20 years for kidnapping.

But Attorney General David Louie says the authority is holding a new parole minimum hearing on Wednesday because procedural problems arose during the 2009 hearing.

The state says the minimum terms set four years ago are correct and it's asking the authority to leave them unchanged.
