Governor proposes pesticide disclosure guidelines

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie is stepping into the debate on disclosure of pesticide use on Kauai.

Abercrombie announced Monday the state will introduce voluntary standards and guidelines for disclosure of pesticide use by large companies. He says the topic shouldn't be decided at the county level.

Abercrombie in an announcement says Kauai lawmakers and his administration have been discussing the need to inform residents of nearby agriculture activities.

He says voluntary, temporary steps will include disclosure of pesticides and setbacks for schools and hospitals. He proposes the temporary steps until rules or proposed laws are developed.

The Garden Island reports the Kauai County council is considering a measure to require buffer zones around public areas and waterways and disclosure of pesticide use and the presence of genetically modified crops.
