A Hawaiian Telcom spokesperson has confirmed that problems with cell phone, Internet, ATM and credit card machines in the Kailua-Kona area are being caused by a fiber optic cable that was cut in a remote area of the Big Island on Sunday.
Pahala, Naalehu, Ocean View and parts of Kona are all being affected, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense.
Hawaii Police say they were notified of the issue around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, but some reported having problems as early as 5:30 p.m.
Hawaiian Telcom says it took a while to locate the cut, and then had to bring in specialized equipment to repair it.
