Controversial Hawaiian mural to remain on display

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Two weeks after complaints prompted the Convention Center to cover up a long-standing mural, Hawaii News Now has learned the cover will come off and the mural will stay.

Native Hawaiians were upset about a portion of the artwork that depicted bones in the sand.

To appease the critics, the Hawaii Tourism Authority said it would remove the piece, which had been there for 16 years. But there was a backlash to that announcement from the arts community and first amendment supporters.

The HTA now says it has reached a compromise to leave the mural up.  They provided no further details.
