Big Island man charged in restaurant robbery

HONOLULU (AP) - A 30-year-old Kailua-Kona man has been charged with robbing a local restaurant.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Klay Brian Bensch faces a court appearance Thursday on charges of robbery, burglary, kidnapping, assault and theft on Sept. 11.

Prosecutors say a suspect entered the restaurant near Palani Road and Kuakini Highway at 10:30 p.m. after the restaurant closed.

The suspect approached a female employee from behind, threatened her with a weapon, forced her into another room and grabbed cash.

The man fled on foot.

Bensch is being held on $29,000 bail at the Kona cellblock.
