Big Island crews close Highway 19 after diesel tanker fire

Posted: Updated:
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Police and fire department crews on the Big Island have closed lanes on Highway 19 at the Kealakaha Bridge after a diesel tanker became fully engulfed in flames.

Witnesses at the scene say that the fire has been extinguished, but that earlier Thursday morning the entire cab of the truck was destroyed by the fire. The tanker portion, which may have been carrying several thousand gallons of diesel fuel, did not catch on fire.

Traffic has been contraflowed in the area, and authorities are opening one lane sporadically so that traffic can flow.

We'll have more details on this developing story as soon as they become available.
