Abercrombie considers West Hawaii fisheries rules

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A rules package that would ban scuba spearfishing in waters off West Hawaii is before Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

The Board of Land and Natural Resources approved the new rules at a meeting in June.

Department spokeswoman Deborah Ward told West Hawaii Today the rules package was delivered to the governor on Monday for his approval.

Ward says no substantive changes were made to the document before it was sent to the governor, only minor changes to correct grammatical mistakes.

The rules would also limit aquarium fish collecting in West Hawaii to 40 species.

The rules were developed over 10 years of discussion and hearings by the West Hawaii Fisheries Council. The council is a community advisory group formed in the late 1990s to manage conflicts over fishing.
