HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Gov. Neil Abercrombie was joined by several healthcare leaders and government officials Tuesday to unveil the new Hawaii Health Connector.
The Connector is an online health insurance marketplace for individuals and small businesses in Hawaii. It was established in 2011 as a nonprofit organization to comply with the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.
"Individuals and small businesses can go and shop and compare on the Connector's website for health insurance benefits and costs" said Insurance Commissioner Gordon Ito.
The Health Connector is for both the uninsured, as well as those who do have coverage but may want to see if there are more affordable options.
"Do they want to stay with the current coverage that they have? Is there an opportunity to leverage the tax subsidies or tax credits?" said Hawaii Health Connector Executive Director Carol Andrews.
The potential tax savings are for individuals who meet certain low income requirements. Small businesses can also take advantage of the Connector by seeing if credits are available to them as well.
The Health Connector is far more than a website.
"We do encourage folks to use the resources that are available to them through our contact center, on our website, and more importantly in their own communities where we've established the marketplace assister organizations on every island" noted Andrews.
The contact center can be reached by calling 877-628-5076. Marketplace assister organizations can be found through the website, at hawaiihealthconnector.com.
Enrollment begins October 1, with plans going into effect January 1, 2014.
