Homicide detectives return to Waipio crime scene

WAIPIO, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Homicide detectives returned to a Waipio crime scene a day after a couple reported finding a dismembered body in a garbage bag. The husband and wife made the discovery along Mililani Memorial Park Road on Sunday.

Police officers used specially-trained dogs to sniff out any clues. Investigators also photographed and collected evidence. Visitors heading to the Waiawa Correctional Facility and Mililani Memorial Park had to drive past all the crime scene tape.

"We thought that they were looking for somebody, like a prisoner," said Nellie Velasco of Waipahu.

Joseph Sotelo and his wife had just left the cemetery on Sunday afternoon when they stopped to pick up bottles and cans to recycle. They said they noticed a foul odor and discovered a torso and arm in a garbage bag about 15 feet down an embankment near a suitcase.

Down the road from where the garbage bag was found, police blocked off another area across the street. The second spot is where the Sotelo's had earlier noticed a pair of new shoes.

"We told them about the shoe area and that's when they walked there and I guess they walked into that side trail and came back out and that's when they pulled us to the side and let us know that they found the bottom part of the person," explained Sheer Sotelo.

A forensic team from the Central Identification Lab of the Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command showed up at HPD's request with shovels and other equipment. With so many unanswered questions, those who drive through the area regularly are uneasy.

"We're just kind of worried. Now we're a little bit more worried about coming here because we come up here in the evenings too sometimes," said Shari Yamashiro of Ewa Beach.
