Hawaii lawmakers to tour molasses spill site

HONOLULU (AP) - State lawmakers say they plan to take a boat tour and be briefed on the effects of a spill of 1,400 tons of molasses in Honolulu Harbor.

A state House spokeswoman said Reps. Ryan Yamane, Chris Lee and Dell Au Belatti plan to tour the harbor and a nearby sailing club on Monday morning.

Officials from The Department of Health, the Department of Land and Natural Resources and Matson Navigation Co., the company responsible for the spill, will join the tour.

Yamane says the site visit will help lawmakers assess the effects to the environment and explore possible solutions.

The spill occurred Sept. 9 when the sugary substance leaked from a section of pipe the company thought was sealed off.
