Traffic Alert: Gas line repair triggers traffic delays heading east

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

[Update 4:15 p.m.]

All lanes of Punahou exit from H1 eastbound have been reopened. Traffic still backed up.

[Original story posted below]

Work on a ruptured gas line at Punahou street is backing traffic up for East Oahu commuters.

Hawaii Gas says it is performing emergency repair work on an underground utility pipeline located on Punahou St. between Bingham and S. Beretania Street.

Hawaii Gas says that a contractor hit a 4-inch gas line near the Punahou off-ramp in front of Kapiolani Hospital.

The emergency work has forced crews to close the left lanes of the Punahou exit that head to Manoa. The lanes are expected to be closed until after evening rush hour.

Police are on site for traffic control. Motorists are urged to take an alternate route if possible.

Traffic reporter Danielle Tucker tweeted, "All EB #hitraffic to Honolulu stop and go. Punahou exit left lanes closed until after evening rush hour. Underground utility complications."

We will have the latest on the traffic situation on Hawaii News Now at 5 p.m.
