Kauai substantially increases dog license fees

Posted: Updated:

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - The price of owning a dog on Kauai is going up.

The Kauai County Council on Wednesday approved an increase of more than 800% for a 2-year dog license from $6 to $50 if the animal is not spayed or neutered.

A 2-year-license for an altered dog will increase from $2 to $15 - a 750% increase.

The measure also increases fees for redeeming a stray dog seized by animal control officers.

The Garden Island reports the county is trying to reduce a $300,000 gap between the amount it provides Kauai Humane Society and the group's expenses for animal control.

Kauai Humane Society director Penny Cistaro calls the license fees reasonable.

She says her group spends $1.1 million on county services each year.
