Council votes to restart rail project

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Honolulu City Council has voted to restart the construction of the rail project.

The vote was 9-0.

Ann Kobayashi and Joey Manahan voted yes with reservations.

Construction has been halted for more than a year. Council committees on Monday advanced two resolutions that were passed by the full council today.

Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation director Daniel Grabauskas said before the council vote that every day the project sits idle it costs the city $200,000.

Today's approval means construction could resume as early as Monday.
