Residents ask tourism officials to stop promoting Kailua

KAILUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Is Kailua too popular for its own good? The town's Neighborhood Board is asking the Hawaii Tourism Authority to stop selling Kailua.

The Board has taken issue with the state's tourism web site, which promotes Kailua as an alternative destination to Waikiki.

Its newly passed resolution says the marketing plan goes against city rules meant to curb and regulate vacation rentals in residential areas.

Late Monday, the Hawaii Tourism Authority's president responded with a statement, "We appreciate the concerns raised and are taking it into consideration," Mike McCartney said.

"As the state's tourism agency, it is important that we strike a balance between the community and a robust tourism economy."
