Maui women rescued from Iao Valley

LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two Kihei women in their forties and their dog were rescued Wednesday morning out of Iao Valley after getting lost while hiking and having to spend the night, according to officials from the Maui County Fire Department.

Wailuku and Kahului firefighters received an alarm at just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday evening for two overdue hikers. A friend had found their vehicle in the locked parking lot of Iao Valley State Park and called 911.

A ground search was conducted until midnight and then suspended until first light the next day.

A rescue helicopter was rlaunched early Wednesday morning, officials say, and found the hikers near a stream. The missing party, including the dog, were airlifted to the main parking lot at Iao State Park.

The hikers were not injured, and medical attention was not required.
