WAIPAHU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A family of three returned home Monday night to find a fire in their second-floor, one bedroom apartment in the Jack Hall Housing complex in Waipahu, according to officials from the Honolulu Fire Department.
An HFD spokesperson says that all three escaped from the scene without injury, as did several other people inside adjacent units. The fire destroyed the apartment where it began and reportedly caused smoke and water damage to five other units.
HFD dispatched fire companies to the fire, located at 94-853 Kuhaulua Street, at approximately 9:23 p.m. The first crew arrived at 9:30 p.m. and found the apartment fully involved in flames.
Firefighters had the fire under control by approximately 10 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage to the apartment where the fire began and to the other units that sustained smoke and water damage is estimated at $400,000.
The American Red Cross responded to provide assistance to those displaced by the fire.
