The University of Hawaii women' soccer team picked up its second straight road win with a 1-0 decision over Oregon State Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field. Tiana Fujimoto's first half goal held up as the Rainbow Wahine completed a thrilling road sweep to improve to 2-2 on the season.
It was a historic weekend for the Rainbow Wahine who also defeated Oregon, 1-0, on Friday. It marked UH's first back-to-back road wins since 2008 and first back-to-back non-conference road victories since 2004. UH also defeated two straight Pac-12 teams after entering the weekend having gone just 3-25 against the conference.
Fujimoto put UH up midway through the first half, then UH survived a barrage of Oregon State chances in the second half. The Rainbow Wahine did it while playing the final 14 minutes of regulation a player down.
UH got on the board first off a beautiful combination play in the 24th minute. Krystal Pascua sent a cross into the box where a flying Alexis Colacchio headed the ball to Fujimoto who volleyed in an open-net shot from the mouth of the goal. It was the first goal of the season for the junior forward who led the team in scoring last season. With the goal Fujimoto moved into a tie for 10th all-time on UH's goal scoring list with 12.
UH held the lead into halftime and would survive a number of close calls in the second, including a point blank shot by the Beavers in front of the UH goal five minutes into the half. Junior Hayden Gibson picked up her second yellow card with just under 14 minutes left in regulation and UH played the remainder of the match with 10 players.
After Gibson's ejection, the Beavers (1-4-1) had another opportunity when a long ball from the wing bounced off the cross bar and just in front of the goal line with just under seven minutes. Oregon State out-shot UH 8-4 in the second half to finish with a 13-9 advantage for the match but couldn't break through. Freshman Monk Berger recorded her second straight road shutout while finishing with four saves, including a pair of timely stops in each half.
UH will now return home to host the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic, Sept. 13 and 15. First up for the Rainbow Wahine is a meeting with Idaho State on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m.
